Okay, So here is the story. Three of us Alaskans have taken Spam® with us in our travels. We then get our photos taken with a can of SPAM®, in some interesting place. There may be more of us out there, I don't know. Ron Clarke and India Spartz have their shots from Stonehenge. I have shots from three continents and several countries. My collection started to appear on this web site in 1998. First as a shot on the home page, and then as they were replaced the moved to other pages. In January of 2001, they now appear here, when their time is up on the splash page. Why? Alaska recently dropped to the number two per capita consumer of SPAM®. Hawaii is now number one. This is a small effort to return Alaska to its rightful spot. Hormel, the maker of SPAM® doesn't know about this site, nor our "project", I can only hope they might agree with the efforts. If not, I'd be happy to remove the public collection, but it would be a shame. BTW, I am told that Hormel prefers SPAM® be written in all upper case letters so it is not confused with junk E-Mail. Meanwhile, enjoy SPAM®, and take a can with you in your travels. Below are SPAM® shots from North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. SPAM® is a registered trademark of Hormel Foods Corporation.

Trakoscan castle is about 80 KM from Zagreb, Croatia, and some say it's the best castle in Croatia. Certainly, the SPAM® liked the 12th or 13th century setting. The guy in the background has a sword to cut the SPAM® with, but he was roped off, so I couldn't get there. For those who can read the diacritical marks the name is Trakošćan. If that didn't display correctly, imagine a full crown over the "s" and a half crown over the "c" and pronounce it "Track-o-shchan" or something like that.
Zoe was kind enough to take this picture.
Copyright, Jon Newstrom, 2003 all rights reserved SPAM® in FRANCE Ron (the one without the big nose) shows his SPAM®, while Cyrano de Bergerac tries to attract birds to his nose. Geese and SPAM®. Ron reports the geese would prefer everyone eat SPAM® rather than Foie Gras. We agree, don't we?
Ah, Paris. It's an amazing town, beautiful architecture, famous works of Art, great food. And you can't believe where I found SPAM®! This nice lady seems to be quite taken with her SPAM®. To Learn more about why there is always a Spam shot on this website, see the SPAM®page.

Hawaii SPAM® There I was trekking through the wilderness on Kauai, and bam, a nice location for a SPAM® shot! Copyright, 2003, Kristeva Zoë, All Rights Reserved
Ivy League SPAM®! On the steps of the Yale Repertory Theatre, Yale University, New Haven Connecticut in October 2002. Notice the fancy Yale tie, and the string for the ID badge (hidden in the pocket), and you might guess I was a Delegate to the Association of Yale Alumni Assembly, and you would be right. Affiliated with the Drama School Class of 1992, I spent a LOT of time at the YRT, but generally went in the back door and not the front. Thanks to Robin for taking this SPAM® shot! And for more Spam® pictures see the Spam® page. For more shots of Yale, see the Yale page. Click on the thumbnail to see it full sized.
Le Spam®! So there I was on a rainy day in Paris, what else could one do but get le Spam® and find a noted landmark. France joins the list of "Alaskans and their Spam®" countries. See more Spam® shots on the Spam® page.

Asia SPAM® Istanbul, Turkey on the "Asia side" in Kadikoy. Turkey had just won third place in World Cup Soccer and there was no shortage of Turkish flags (in fact there was a shortage of red dye and fabric). I had to cheat a bit, as I didn't find a handy photographer. Handing one's camera over to a total stranger was not a good idea. Istanbul is on the border between Europe and Asia. I was staying on the European side, a ferry ride across the Bosphorus (for a mere 700,000 Turkish Lira - 50 cents) and I was in Asia! This marks the fourth continent for my SPAM® photo series.
SPAM® in Turkey! No not Turkey SPAM® - although I missed a bet not bringing a can with me! This can of Spam® is on the grounds of the Aya Sophia which is a must-see in Istanbul. The Aya Sophia is a Byzantine Church built in 537 a.d. First a Christian church, then a mosque, and now a museum. Thanks to David and Stephanie Hoke.
This is also a plug for the photographer, and a true friend, Islam Ibrahim. Need a driver in Cairo? Call him +20 (0)101534387, tell him you know me or at least saw this. You can't go wrong! Have him tell you the Newstrom and Papyrus story.
Howdy Partner. Well, more accurately "My Friend ..." Although there is no way to tell if this is the wild west or not, it is Egypt. Horseback was an interesting way to visit the Pyramids of Giza. Part of the Spam® in Egypt series. In Egypt, just about everyone is your friend. Photo by Mohammed Ali (not the boxer)
This is part of the Spam® in Egypt series. Giza, Egypt. A close-up of the Great Pyramid of Cheops. The largest of the three famous ones in Giza. 146.5 meters high, built around 2600 b.c. or 4,602 years ago. 2,500,000 blocks make up the pyramid, in this shot I'm only 3 meters or so off the sand
Spam® at the Sphinx in Giza, Egypt. Part of the Spam® in Egypt series. As photos cycle from the home page to here, there will be more and more, so keep checking back. Perhaps my friends in Dubrovnik, Croatia should consider the Sphinx. In Dubrovnik they are still upset the city nobles just opened the gates to Napoleon's army. It was his artillery who used the nose and beard of the Sphinx for target practice. The nose is in London today.
Spam® in Madagascar! Alaskan-for-Spam®, Ron Clarke with a Ring-Tailed Lemur and a can of Spam. This marks the first Spam® photo from Africa for this web page. Ron, you will note is also the photographer of "Spam® at Stonehenge" below.
Is the Ronule's Lemur enjoying some Spam®? Take a closer look and click on the thumbnail.

At the 1st Century Roman Triumphal Arch of Sergius. Once studied by Michelangelo. Notice the Hapsburg style building (the yellow color is a giveaway if the crowns over the windows wasn't a big enough hint). So the combination of Roman and Hapsburg means it has to be Croatia, and this is in Pula. Photo by Holly Berman
Kumvrovec, Croatia. This Spam® photo is with Josip Broz otherwise know as "Tito". Tito was born in Kumrovec, about a hour's drive from Zagreb, a nice village right on the Croatia/Slovenia border. This statue is right next to the house he was born in 1892. From 1945 to 1980 Tito was Premier of Yugoslavia. That Yugoslavia is now Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and the Federated Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia, Kosovo, and Montenegro). This is another in the series of Leaders of Former Yugoslavia and Spam®. Okay, I forgot the can of Spam® on this trip, so I crudely pasted one in. It still counts doesn't it? Photo by Habib Massoud
Artful Spam® This is an art gallery in Pula, Croatia and with a little Spam®, and Waske's hat it's indeed a work of Art.
Slobo's Spam! This can of Spam® photo needs a little explanation. I found myself in Belgrade, the capital of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia) in May of 2001. So three Alaskans and two of their friends went to the residence of Slobodan Milosevich, former President of Yugoslavia. A crowd of about 50 people are hanging about in front of the house, mainly pensioners, are guarding Milosevich. Only a couple of weeks later he was arrested by Yugoslav authorities. Perhaps the threat (treat?) of Spam® did the trick. Now "Slobo" is in the Hauge, Netherlands. (Click on thumbnail for a larger image) Photo by a Rich McClear
Alaskans For Spam! Alaska is now the number two per capita consumer of Spam®. Hawaii is the number one. Throughout this site you will see photos of Jon Newstrom with a can of Spam®. So far the pictures have been taken on two continents and a half a dozen countries. In no way should this photo be considered an endorsement by the State of Alaska.
This Spam® shot was taken in Banja Luka, in The Rebuplica Serbska you can tell by the letters on the sign.

Spam® in Pula, Croatia. The Arena is a Roman Coliseum finished in the year 30. 1,979 years before this photo was taken.
Spam® in Split, Croatia. The additional fun in this photo is the lighting being set up in the Diocletian Palace (circa 300 BC) is controlled by a computer only 2,299 years newer. Photo by Valerie Arganbright.
Spam® at Bush House in London, England. Bush House is home of the BBC World Service. Photo by John Shearer.
Duntune House, near Dundee, Scotland. You have to look for the Spam®. In the photo are also Charles Angus Fletcher, and Henny King.
This Lion seems to like Spam® too! He, or she is in Trafalgar Square in London, England.
