Dubrovnik, Croatia is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.  Here are a few photos.  Click on any image to see a full sized picture and use the back button on your browser to return.

"Hamlet Castle" I call it.  The play is an annual event in Dubrovnik and where better to perform it (short of Denmark).

Fort Lourijenac is also an interesting site.  As you can see it is set off from Dubrovnik.  The Walls on three sides are over 3 meters thick!  It could withstand any attack from the sea.  However the walls facing Dubrovnik itself a relatively weak.  That was the nobleman in charge of defending the city couldn't take over the city from "his" fort.  Smart.

A canon on Fort Lourijenac ("Hamlet Castle") notice the cannon balls in the distance.  Who else would shoot Marble cannon balls?  Supply of stone is plentiful, and I'll bet Jack Aubrey (see Aubrey/Maturin) would call them "smashers"

Hamlet is performed here, the court and other scenes played below and this no doubt is the guard's walk.  You can almost feel King Hamlet's Ghost walking these walls.

Dubrovnik is a walled city.  800 years ago it defended itself and became a Mediterranean fortress.

Street DU.JPG (80843 bytes)Dubrovnik has a combination of wide open streets and many
narrow side streets.  This cafe and sandwich shop is the perfect
place to take a break from the sun.

The city wall tour is only a few Kuna and about five kilometers of stairs and great views!
